The Crone and the Crows

The crow in Northern Europe has been intertwined with the symbol of the Crone, the death-giving Goddess Valkyries, who is described as a man-eating woman as she often took a totemic form as a raven, crow, or vulture.

Myths talk of this shapeshifter, sometimes taking the form of a beautiful virgin, other times a witch, a hag, a monster, or a crow. In old ballads the "Three Ravens" were birds of doom perching over a slain hero, though sometimes there would be only two of them, who proposed to pluck out the bonny blue eyes of the slain knight.

One of the Goddess's archaic forms, the crone Coronis, was a "Crow" who was transformed into the virgin mother of the healing-god Asclepius, but similar forms of her appeared in myths as Mother Time, harbinger of death. Because of this deep connection with the death goddess and the association with the other world, ravens and crows were viewed as oracles and teachers of magic.

Romans regarded the crow as a symbol of the future because it cries "Cras, Cras." (Tomorrow, Tomorrow.)
They call a family of crows a Murder, further signaling the death of this government, its ruling power, and the old world, there is still hope in Tomorrow.
